Are you currently using a theme with Winterboard? Or five icon rows and dock? Ever wished you could make your icons smaller to improve the look of your springboard?

Well Shrink could be just what you've been waiting for! It allows you to change the size of your icons from 100%, down to 25% their original size, thats small. Its currently available in Cydia for $0.99, and is certainly worth buying, but if your not sure and would like to try it for free first, then follow these instructions.

It works great alongside the likes of Proswitcher / Overboard / Infinidock, to name just a few.

NOTES ;

How To Jailbreak All Devices On 3.1.2 With Redsn0w 0.9

Jailbroken already? Using blackra1n? Or jailbreaking for the first time?

Well the Dev Team have just released redsn0w 0.9 public beta, their latest jailbreak tool which has been updated to suit all devices on 3.1.2 firmware, as well as a jailbreak tool, it installs Cydia and also gives you the option to add custom boot / recovery logos, this is what a lot of us have been waiting for, and a lot of users also prefer Dev Team jailbreaks because they claim its a cleaner, more complete jailbreak!

The only bad news, if you own an iPhone 3GS with new bootrom, or an iPod Touch late 2G or 3G, its still a tethered jailbreak only for you guys, fingers crossed this might be addressed in the future.

NOTES ;

a) You must be running 3.1.2 firmware on your device

b) You must download the following to your desktop before starting ;

Your current firmware

Redsn0w 0.9 Windows / Mac

Custom boot / recovery logos if wanted

c) I would recommend you do a full restore in iTunes before jailbreaking

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ;

1. Connect your device to your pc via usb cable

( Close iTunes if it opensand cancel sync )

2 Run redsn0w

3. Browse for the firmware on your desktop

4. A message will now pop up, THIS IS IMPORTANT ;

If you are using an iphone 3gs with new bootrom, or an ipod touch 3g or late 2g, you must select YES, this is for a tethered jailbreak!

If you are running any other device, select NO, this is for an untethered jailbreak!

5. Select next

6. Now check the following boxes only ;

Cydia - This will install Cydia

Boot Logo - Browse for logo on your desktop if wanted

Recovery Logo - Browse for logo on your desktop if wanted

7. Select next

8. Your device now needs to go into recovery so ;

Hold down the power and home buttons, dont release them until the recovery logo is displayed on your device, redsn0w will now do its work

9. After a short while a message will pop up saying redsn0w has finished but will continue to work on your device, click finish

10. Now just wait for your device to re-boot in its new jailbroken glory, enjoy!

How To Change Boot Logos With Redsn0w 0.9

If like me your already jailbroken with blackra1n and your happy with your current set up, but would like to change your boot / recovery logos, then this is for you! The dev team have just released a public beta of reds0w 0.9 which allows you to do just that, without having to restore or re-jailbreak your device first, and it works great!

NOTES ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken

b) You must be running 3.1.2 firmware on your device

c) You must download the following to your desktop before starting ;

Your current firmware

How To Install Infinidock

Infinidock was released into Cydia a few days ago by chpwn, one of the devs behind proswitcher and overboard, two other great apps.

It basically allows you to display up to ten icons on your dock, ( though this looks very cramped ), and scroll through an infinite amount of icons left and right on your dock, its another great way to add shortcuts to your favourite apps. I currently use infinidock, for all my social networking and mail apps etc, and it works fantastic alongside the fore mentioned proswitcher and overboard, give it a try and decide for yourselves.

NOTES ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken

b) You must be running the latest 3.1.2 firmware

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

repo.beyouriphone.com

2. Now select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

It's official, Appulo.us will be shutting down soon due to the dev not being able to manage, optimize, develop or scale Appulo.us to meet the demand of millions (yes millions) of users. So what now?...

TDDebug (one of the Admins at Hackulo.us) has created AppTrackr which is said to completely replace Appulo.us. AppTrackr will also inherit Appulo.us current database and will be significantly better then Appulo.us

Highlights of the user interface

Ajax is used for almost all operations, making the website more responsive and faster. Javascript will render and construct the page instead of our server.
App icons are fully rounded instead of being sometimes rectangular and ugly (like on Appulous).
Screenshots are viewed in a small frame which can be navigated with buttons. The screenshots will fade/slide in from each other.
Categories and sorting options are easy to access and manipulate.
Search is easy to operate.
Default options on submission are tailored for mass-submission.

AppTrackr is currently in Beta and the only way you can try it out is if your part of Hackulo.us Tier 3 Donators list.

But at $30 dollars to be Tier 3 I rather just wait for the public release which is said to be by the end of this month.

Redsn0w 0.9 For 3.1.2 Firmware Imminent

Earlier today Musclenerd ( a member of the dev team ), tweeted that he had managed to retrieve the source code for Redsn0w, and is now re-writing redsn0w to make it compatible with 3.1.2 firmware, going by the picture below it looks like its in testing and should hopefully be released shortly for windows users, followed by macosx and linux, though no eta has been given as of yet.

The new version will be redsn0w 0.9, it will be a quick, easy jailbreak as in the past, but this time also has the option of adding custom boot logos which will please many of you out there. The bad news? It will still be a tethered jailbreak for new boot iphone 3gs / late ipod touch 2g / and ipod touch 3g, but for the rest of us, this is great news.

Stay tuned and as soon as its released we will post full jailbreak instructions!

GT Theme Review

The GT Theme was just released recently into Cydia, I have tried many themes over the past months and have to say this is one of the most complete themes I have tried. Im still using it and intend to stick with it for the foreseeable future. There are many more updates to come which among other things will increase the number of included icons, the dev also includes a link to contact him with icon suggestions, and an icon template is also included for advanced users to create icons themselves, now thats service.

For any further help with creating your own icons watch this video by Rene818 or hit us up if your still not sure, we are happy to help!

The theme is quite dark, its comes complete with wallpapers for springboard / lockscreen / messages etc. There are also themed sliders / text bubbles / dialer / calculator / notes and of course icons. To top it all UI Sounds are also included for things like mail and messages. The battery theme and lockscreen slider are very clean and contemporary, and system strings have also been edited to suit.

I also installed Fontswap from Cydia and GTFont to put the finishing touches to the overall look of the theme, both of these are free downloads.

Overall this theme looks awesome and runs very smoothly, I dont have any slowdown at all on my iphone 3gs.

I'd rate this theme a great 10/10.

How To Install n64iphone Emulator

If you follow these instructions it will give you a working N64 emulator which you can add as many games to as you want, the 3gs will obviously run this smoother and more responsive but it does also work on all other devices. This latest version is also bluetooth compatible and can be played via a nintendo wii remote, and the overall look and feel of the emulator has also been improved with several updates already, credit to Zodttd.

NOTES ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken

c) Must have ssh installed on your device

d) You must have winscp installed on your pc

App Review

n64iphone

Only a few weeks ago Zodttd released an early version of and N64 emulator for iphone, aptly named n64iphone. As I stated this is an early version so isnt perfect, but with several updates already,it is getting there.

Everything has been included except landscape mode and save state, though you can still save via memory card. Controls work either by onscreen display controls + accelerometer, or via bluetooth with a Nintendo Wii remote. On screen buttons are limited though but work well, character movement is controlled via onscreen d-pad, camera view is controlled via accelerometer, and there are two buttons for actions. Sound can also be a bit glitchy, on some games more than others, but there is an option to turn off sound, which can also help improve any graphical glitches as well. Some games run quite smoothly whilst others can be very glitchy or slow and jerky.

Games i've tried;

1) Super Mario 64

This game plays and runs quite smoothly

2) Mario Kart 64

This game plays quite smoothly but is a little slow

3) Zelda Ocarina of Time

This game runs and plays quite slow but I love it

Roms can be ssh'd into your device, or there is an option to download them directly from within the emulator, which is a nice touch. Be aware though, not all game roms will play, it really is a case of trial and error.

Overall I think its a nice port, and it will get better and better, Zodttd works hard on these emulators and im sure we'll see many more updates.

I'd rate this early release a sound (early) 7/10.

How To Install iRealSMS

This is a must have app for those of you out there you send and receive loads of text messages. It has loads of extra features that Apples standard message app lacks, send/reply to messages from within any other app or from the lockscreen, that includes picture messages! Use as your default message app, received messages include photo of senders ( if photo is added in contacts ), view received/sent/draft messages and also converstaions, emoji are also included. Overall this is an excellent app and will definately become your default, and no more closing down apps or games just to send a message anymore! You'll love it!

How To Install HapticPro

HapticPro gives force feedback to your device everytime a button is pressed or an app is opened. I turn off my keyboard sounds and use this alone, it works great and gives your keyboard more feel.

Overboard is a very quick way of browsing and selecting all your springboard pages, no more swiping left or right through multiple pages of apps and icons. Themes can be used on icons and backgrounds to enhance it even more, and sounds are also available.

Multi-tasking is here at last! Palm Pre style at that! This has to be the best app of 2009 and in my oppinion is a must have, its great for switching between apps and cuts out the need for apps to reload before using, try it! ProSwitcher has landed!

Best Jailbreak Tweaks To Start 2010 With

Well its now official, here we are now into 2010! There is a lot of talk already about what this year will bring to us iPhone/iPod Touch lovers, there should be much to look forward to, even more so for those of us in the jailbreak community. So where to start with my first blog this year?

Well over the xmas period I restored my iPhone 3GS, and have set it up from scratch with what I think are the best apps and tweaks available, from Cydia of course! So what better way to start than with a brief description of some of these!

1. ProSwitcher

This brings palm pre style multi-tasking to the iphone, this was both a much needed and wanted feature. By double clicking the home button ProSwitcher is opened revealing screen shots of any apps that are currently running in the background, these can be swiped left or right to view, simply touch the screenshot to open that app, phone/mail/springboard run all the time by default. To run an app in the background, simply double click the home button whilst running the app, this then opens ProSwitcher allowing you to switch between running apps. To stop an app running in the background, simply open proswitcher and swipe the apps screenshot upwards off the screen, ie palm pre style. I have so far found this feature fantastic, it runs very smoothly, uses very little memory, and looks great, in short a must have!

2. OverBoard

This tweak when opened shows an overview of all your springboard pages and apps. To open OverBoard click the icon, then scroll up and down to view springboard pages, to open a page simply touch it. This was developed by the same people that created ProSwitcher and again is faultless so far. It runs very smoothly and looks great as it can be themed etc. Its a great feature for those of us that have many pages of apps to flick through.

3. HapticPro

This is a very basic tweak that basically adds feedback to your device everytime a button is pressed, including the keyboard for messages/mail etc. The amount of feedback you want can be adjusted to suit. I personally turn off key sounds and use only HapticPro, its great.

4. iRealSMS

Im quite new to this one but so far I have to say its another one of those apps I now couldnt do without. It can be used as your main message system if you want, or you can just take advantage of some parts of it and keep Apples messaging system as default. It has some great features, it allows you to reply or send a message from within any other application, no need to close apps anymore first, this saves a lot of time. It also allows you to send emoji and photos. In iRealSMS you can browse new messages/sent messages/drafts, and can even view conversations. Another nice feature is that messages display photos of the senders ( If you have photos saved to their contacts ). This really is another must have app.

5. qTweeter

Another time saving app, send tweets or messages to twitter or facebook from within any other application. Simply swipe down from the status bar to open. One of its best features is the ability to send photos/mail links/music links, depending on what your listening to on your ipod, or what site your visiting in safari. For any tweetaholics, another must have.

6. GT Theme

This is currently my fave theme, its very complete, it comes with wallpapers/ui sounds/dialer/calculator/message theme/badges/fillers/icons/live weather/battery/lockscreen etc. It looks and sounds great. It also comes complete with an icon template to enable you to create more icons if desired. Ill be using this theme for a long time yet I think.

This latest version, ( nes4iphone 1.0-1 ), is also bluetooth compatible and can be played via a nintendo wii remote, and the overall look and feel of the emulator has also been improved.

( Winraar is used to unzip your downloaded rom files )

Fring First To Bring Video Calling To iPhone

Fring are the first to bring video calling to iPhone, sort of ! Due to the iPhone not having a front placed camera users can only see who is calling them, and currently the service is only available via wi-fi, although if your jailbroken i'm sure Voipover3g or 3gunrestrictor might work and enable use over 3g and edge.

Fring developers have stated that as soon as a front camera is added to iPhone real video calling will be available enabling both callers to see each other. That would be great, lets hope we see some major hardware updates on future iPhones.

Rock Update Includes SSH Password Change Option

Whats your oppinion of Rock App? Its had a lot of bad press! But I for one have had no problems with it at all, in fact I use it now quite often. The loading times are much quicker than Cydia and most of the same apps are available. Any apps you download are saved into their systems so if you need to restore it will always have your paid downloads on file, saving you from needing to re-purchase. More and more devs are now using Rock App for their paid applications.

Well after a recent update, there is another great reason to install and try Rock App. On opening you will be prompted with a pop up telling you you need to change your SSH passwords, ( only if you haven't already done so ). This is a great security feature and is very important in light of all the ssh worms out there!

Simply select "Change Now" and type in your new password, you will then be informed with another pop up that your password has been successfully changed, as easy as that, the other way is to use Mobile Terminal ( Check out my earlier blog), which isn't quite as easy.

This is another huge step forward for Rock App and stability keeps getting better and better, more reason to use both Rock and Cydia from now on. Please let me know what you think of it, or if you have any issues with it!

Dragon Dictation Coming To iPhone Soon

I cant wait for the release of this app, its called Dragon Dictation For iPhone. Its based on the award winning pc and mac application which allowed you to use your microphone to write words by using only speech recognition.

Well on iPhone it works much the same way, you press record and talk into your iphone clearly in 20 second clips, clips can be added together for longer notes. After stopping recording your text is displayed and can then be used in-app for messages, e-mails etc.

Check this video out and see for yourselves how accurate it looks, its almost 100%. No price or eta has been given yet but I for one will def be buying it!

How To Install SmartScreen & Widgets

I recently posted a blog on Smartscreen with basic install instructions, if your thinking of trying it out but aren't fully confident on how to, then these instructions should help, 1 or 2 of the widgets do take a little bit more setting up. Up to now I cant praise this tweak enough, it runs like a dream and looks great, all in all it cost me approx £6 and has been worth every penny.

NOTE :

a) Your device must be jailbroken

b) You must be running 3.x.x firmware

To install follow these instructions ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

c) Enter serial number, app will now be open

4. To install widgets, ( as none are included ), just browse the mediaphone repo in Cydia, eg ;

This displays your favourite contacts in a cover flow system and allows you to call, text, or e-mail them from your lock screen

There are 2 or 3 different styles available, you can set them to 12 or 24 hour format

In testing I found qTweeter conflicts with Smartscreen, the keyboard was not popping up in some widgets like Twitfeed and Search Bar, if you find this happens to you, just un-install qTweeter for now, I have been informed by the Smartscreen devs they are currently working on a fix for this problem and it should be sorted in a future update!

Up to now I have had very quick responses from both the Smartscreen devs and the Widget devs, customer service seems very good, another reason to try this for yourselves!

Snappy Camera App

Have you ever needed to take a quick photo of something, but found by the time you've closed your current app and opened the camera app its been too late?

If the answer is yes, then this app is for you, its called Snappy, and is currently available in Cydia for a small charge of $1;99, ( i'll keep you posted when a free version becomes available for you to try ).

To run Snappy your iphone must be jailbroken and running 3.x.x firmware.

Snappy basically gives you the ability to take photos from within any other app, without the need to close the current app first. It works on both your springboard and lockscreen. All you need to do to open the camera is tap and hold the status bar, the camera will then slide down into view, all within 1 to 2 seconds max.

There are 3 touch screen buttons available ;

a) Camera Icon

This will activate the shutter and take a still photo, no video as of yet

b) Gear Icon

This opens settings, toggle on or off both camera lockscreen access, and library lockscreen access

c) Photos Icon

This opens the camera roll, it doesn't give you access to all your other stored photos

Snappy also works in harmony alongside other apps that need to be accessed via the status bar such as SBSettings and qTweeter.

Overall I'm quite impressed with this app, ( its great for those impulsive pics ), it runs smoothly and opens very quickly, just as it says on the tin.

Review, & How To Install Multifl0w

We've all seen the adds for the Palm Pre and HTC handsets boasting about the ability to multi-task apps, why on earth didn't Apple include this feature on iPhone? Whatever the reason, lets hope they change this in a future OS upgrade.

In the meantime, Multifl0w has now been released in both Cydia and Rock to the jailbreaking community. This app is a heaven sent gift for anybody wanting the benefits muti-tasking brings to iPhone, and unfortunately for Apple, gives users yet another reason to go ahead and jailbreak their devices.

I installed this app yesterday and paid for it via Rock, it also needs another app running side by side with it to work called Backgrounder.

Multifl0w basically allows you to have multiple apps running at the same time, the ones your not using just stay open and run in the background. To view or change running apps simply double click the home button. This will bring up a cover flow like system, displaying thumbnails of all running apps, swipe left or right to view, touch a thumbnail to open the app.

So far this seems to run very smoothly and I for one will be keeping it on my iPhone for the time being. However a couple of pointers worth mentioning ;

a) When running more than 2 or 3 apps it uses a lot of system ram

b) This will probably not work as well on anything other than a 3GS, because the ram and speed of the other devices just might not cope with it

c) Dont leave apps running for long periods of time that your just not using, this will free ram

d) Dont leave apps like Cydia or Rock etc running too long as these can drain your battery

If you want to give this a try and judge for yourselves, then download free trial from Rock, and purchase after 10 days if you like, or follow the instructions below ;

Speed Up Cydia By Installing NoCyfresh SBToggle

Are you getting tired of opening Cydia only to find it seems to take an age to load and refresh ?

Well a new tweak called noCyfresh may be the answer to your prayers. It is an SBSettings toggle that enables you to switch on or off the Cydia refresh feature. When switched off it speeds up Cydia ten fold, lets be honest, you dont need a refresh every time you open Cydia. If you open Cydia and decide you want it to update and refresh, this can still be done manually in the Changes section.

Hopefully, Saurik will address this problem in future anyway, because Cydia is still king, but in the meantime, this is another winner for the jailbreak community.

noCyfresh is available as a free download in Cydia via the iSpazio repo.

I have installed and tried this myself, my phone is an iPhone 3GS 32GB, running 3.1.2 firmware, and jailbroken with blackra1n, everything runs great and im very happy with it, but I just cant seem to get noCyFresh to work, I've toggled both on and off and nothing seems to make any difference, if your having similar problems or find its working perfectly well for you, I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions you may have for our readers.

QuickWidgets-A Free SmartScreen Alternative

With Smartscreen only just released, there is already another free contender in the running, it is called Quickwidgets, though is still in beta format.

Quickwidgets has the same idea in mind, offering various widgets for your lockscreen which you can manage, move, and customise to suit your own needs.

One nice feature, is the ability to move widgets quickly simply by shaking your device, you can also resize widgets, something that Smartscreen doesn't offer as of yet.

So if you don't want to fork out for Smartscreen just yet, then follow these instructions and give Quickwidgets a try ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

How To Install Overboard or Orbit For Free

Many of us got really excited with the release of Orbit, produced and developed by Steven Stroughton, who has successfully developed many other apps which I have personally purchased and downloaded, from both Cydia and the app store. Orbit runs very much the same way as Expose on Mac, allowing iPhone users to quickly view and jump between different springboard pages. I have been using Orbit since it was first released and have been happy with it.

But on Friday, we saw the release of Overboard, another Expose like system, this time produced by Ryan Petrich, who has also developed many other successfull apps in the past. I thought I would give it a try and compare the two.

Up to now, Overboard seems to be out performing Orbit, it loads quicker, has support for Winterboard themes, has full customisation, has search page included, and has different ways to access it ;

eg. Home button / Springboard icon / Pinch gesture.

All that said, Orbit has also just released an update which will undoubtedly close the gap in some of these areas.

If your thinking of giving either one a try, but not sure which, then follow these instructions and try them both for free first ;

How To Bypass Appulo.us Troll Bridge

Many of you out there from the jailbreak community will have noticed the Troll Bridge that has been put in place on the popular Appulo.us cracked app site. A Troll Bridge for those of you that dont know, means you have to answer a question to gain access to the site, a question which is also changed several times a day to complicate things even further. The whole purpose of this system is to cut down on the number of visitors per day the site gets until its servers are updated and can then cope, recently, with over 3,000,000 visitors a day, the site has been running very slowly and sometimes wont even load. The down side to this is the questions are aimed at the "In Crowd" whilst keeping out ( as they say ) all the "Leechers", this however, will leave a lot of people out in the cold.

If your one of those people, try following this simple procedure, it will help you to bypass the Troll Bridge system ;

1. Open Google on your pc

2. In the search bar, type in and enter the name of the app your looking for followed by ;

site:appulo.us

eg. assassins creed site:appulo.us

3. When your results are displayed, dont select the main Appulo.us link, instead select the Caching link underneath

4. Scroll down the page until you find the Appulo.us download links

5. Download ipa ( cracked app ) to desktop

6. Open iTunes / Applications

7. Drag and drop ipa into iTunes / Applications

8. Connect device to pc via usb and allow iTunes to sync and install new app

NOTE ;

To use this method you must be jailbroken, and must have Appsync installed from Cydia.

Enjoy, remember though, this is only a temporary system, the site once updated will be again open to everyone, yeeeeaaaah man!

iRealQuickSMS

I have just installed a great iphone app / tweak called iRealQuickSMS. This allows you to reply or send text messages from within any app, and from your lockscreen as well. It is only available on jailbroken iphones, another reason to bite the bullet if your still sitting on the fence.

The app is available via Cydia under the BigBoss Repo, and will cost you approx £4:99. Once purchased you will be given a serial number to enter, the benefit to this is that if you ever need to restore, you just need to install the app again and re-enter your serial number, you wont have to pay again, and will get all future updates free as well.

On first opening the app via the icon, adjust the settings to suit yourself, I would highly recommend Volume + Touch to activate the sms app in future, this means to send a message you need to press the volume button, then touch the volume picture that appears onscreen, this will then open the text input box and the keyboard. This can be used in both portrait and landscape mode.

For anybody that sends / receives a lot of messages, this really is the app for you, it makes life so much easier, and saves a lot of time due to not needing to close down apps to reply to, or send a message.

I'D RATE THIS APP A STRONG 10/10

66. Improve Voice Control

Most phones contain some contacts stored by their first name only. You'll find "Call Joanna Smith" works a lot better than "Call Jo". So expand abbreviations and add last names to your contacts. This significantly improves the ability of voice control to understand. You can also create a new contact for the same person as an alias. Using the earbud mic also seems to improve recognition.

67. Pause Downloads

Large applications or updates can sometimes take a long time to download over a data connection and you might want to pause them whilst you check your e-mail or browse with safari.

To pause the download, tap the icon. The progress bar will stop midway and beneath the word paused appears. To continue the download, simply tap the icon again.

68. Favourites Are Not Just For Calls

Favourites and recents are great for making quick calls and returning calls to people who've phoned you. But have you noticed the little blue arrow on the right hand edge? Tap here for options to call that person back on any of their numbers, send an e-mail, or Sms, or add them to your favourites list. And in OS3.x.x you can also send contact details via Mms.

69. Rapid Calendar Scrolling

In the calendar application, tapping the arrows to move through months can be tedious. But did you know that if you hold your finger on the arrows your iphone will rapidly move through the months? Handy for setting appointments way ahead in the future.

70. Avoid Sms Embarrassment

Usually when a text message arrives the iphone displays it on the lockscreen, even if your iphone is locked. To disable this, set Text Preview to off via Settings / Messaging.

Currently google maps is the only application that supports this gesture, but if you use two fingers to tap the map it zooms out.

62. Record and Play

Whilst using the voice memo recorder, you can continue to use other applications such as e-mail and safari. Simply begin recording as usual and press home to exit the voice memo application. The status bar will glow red and recording continues. Tap the status bar to return to the voice memo app.

63. A Scientific Calculator

The usual calculator provides large, easy to use buttons for basic arithmetic. If you tip the iphone sideways, you'll see a scientific calculator. You can now perform more complex calculations. OS3.x.x adds copy & paste and, if you swipe across the display, backspace.

64. Download Wallpapers

You can download wallpapers from a number of sites, including ;

The easiest way to get them onto your iphone is to use mobile safari to browse the site. Navigate through flickr until a suitable wallpaper is almost full screen. The 3GS allows you to add a percentage battery life indicator to the status bar. This is enabled via ; Settings / Usage.

How To Install Sauriks Cydialer Lockscreen Tweak

Saurik of the Dev team and creator of Cydia, has just developed a great lockscreen tweak called Cydialer. This is basically a cover flow system which displays all your favourite phone numbers and contact photos, these can be scrolled through just like your ipod album collection, but without needing to unlock your iphone. It looks and works great.

To operate ;

1. Press the home button to view lockscreen

2. Browse for desired contact

3. Select contact

4. Press slide to call

( Or cancel to choose another contact etc )

Remember though your lockscreen doesn't stay illuminated for long, so you might want to download 20 or 60 second lockscreen as well from Cydia to get the best from it, though whilst flicking through contacts it does stay lit up. If you want to give it a try follow these instructions ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

3. Open then scroll down page until you see a link for Cyget, select and install this first, this is important

Another SSH Worm, There Could Be More On The Way

I posted a blog recently reporting on an SSH iPhone hack that was injecting iphones with a message on their lockscreen saying they had to pay a fee to get their iphone unlocked again. Well another hacker, called Ikee, has just created another hack, this time injecting iphones with a picture of 80's singer Rick Astley, and a message saying " Ikee is never going to give you up". This hack again uses a worm to access iphones that are running open ssh and are still using the default " alpine " password.

This really highlights the importance again of switching off ssh when not in use, and of changing the default password.

These hacks could become more and more frequent, so be warned, change your password now to protect your iphone, or an ssh hack could be on its way, TO YOU!

56. Speedier Synchronization

When you connect your phone to your Mac or Pc, try to avoid plugging in via usb hub or any other device such as your Macs keyboard. Going directly into your computer can result in a speedier sync with itunes. Some brands of Pc make the matter more complicated by having different ports on the pc run at different speeds, so it might be worth experimenting to see if this applies to you.

57. Easier Listening

Three new buttons appear when listening to audio books, podcasts, or watching video casts.
Email: send a link to the current podcast via email.
Skip back: jump back 30 seconds.
Play back speed: (not in videos) double or half the play back speed.

58. Synchronise Notes

You can now synchronise notes application data with your mac or pc. Configure this from iTunes. Click the iPhone icon on the left of iTunes, then click the info tab. Scroll down to notes and enable synchronisation.

59. Surf Whilst Talking

If you are connected to a wifi network you can surf the web whilst on a call, which could be just the thing for conference calls whilst you are using speaker phone. Just press 'home' before launching safari and you can surf whilst you talk. Your phone is even smart enough to disable the click sound as you type whilst you are on the call.

60. Send Multiple Photographs

Single photographs can be sent by mms, email, and uploaded to mobile me. You can also select up to 5 to share via email, but beyond that the share button becomes disabled. You can work around this however, select as many photographs as you like and tap 'copy'. You can then paste them into a new email.

The only down side to using appulo is there is sometimes so much traffic it is hard to get connected, if your also finding this try some of the sites listed below as alternatives, the best of which I have found is ;

Appcake works very much the same way as appulo, to download apps (ipa's) on your pc follow these instructions ;

1. Browse on pc to find an ipa you want on any of the listed sites

2. Download ipa to your desktop

( I recommend you scan every downloaded ipa for viruses if you can )

3. Open iTunes / Applications

4. Drag and drop new ipa into applications

5. Connect your device to pc via usb cable and allow to sync with iTunes, this will install any ipa's you have added into your iTunes applications

6. Thats it, enjoy

( If not happy with new app, simply delete it from iTunes and re-sync to delete from device )

These two sites also have a springboard app as well, again most of you will probably have installous installed, this enables users to download appulo ipas directly to your device, well appcake also have an app which works exactly the same way, its called quite simply, Appcake.

To get these apps on your springboard follow these instructions ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

I recommend not to download any ipa's bigger than 20mb as it can take a long time, anything above that size download directly from the internet on your pc, you may need to register to enable downloads

51. Take a screenshot

You can take a screenshot from any application in the iphone simply by pressing the home and sleep/wake buttons together. The screen will flash and the camera sound will play. Such snaps are automatically saved to your camera roll and you can view it via the camera application.

52. Find Airports

Typing in the three letter airport code while in google maps will bring the airport up on the map. So for example ;

London Heathrow is LHR and John F Kennedy in New York is JFK.

53. Point The Way In Google Maps

Tap the cross hair icon once to find your current location as usual, and tap again to switch to directional mode. The map will rotate in the direction your facing and a cone appears indicating your current orientation.

54. Forward & Delete SMS

You can now forward and delete individual messages, both standard sms text messages and new multi-media messages. Tap the edit button, then tap the circles to the left of each message to select them. Then tap forward or delete.

55. Shake To Shuffle

Whilst playing music, shaking your iphone shuffles to another track at random. Cleverly the phone disables this when listening to podcasts or audio books. Shuffling works whilst the ipod app is running, but not if the phone is locked or your running another app. You can disable shuffle altogether through Settings/iPod.

How To Perform A Reboot After A Tethered Jailbreak

As many of you will already know, and probably tried, some devices on the latest 3.1.2 firmware can only use a tethered jailbreak system with blackra1n, eg ;

iPhone 3gs ( With new iboot )

iPod Touch 3g

iPod Touch 2g MC

A tethered jailbreak just means that every time you lose power to your device, whether the battery has drained, or a Cydia app you have installed requires a reboot, you will need to connect your device to your computer and re-run the jailbreak program, in order to power it back up again, otherwise it just sticks on the connect to itunes screen.

Instructions ;

1. Connect your switched off device to pc via usb cable

( Connect to iTunes logo will appear on device screen )

2. Run jailbreak software ( eg. blackra1n )

( Just ignore iTunes opening or any other dialogue boxes that open, dont touch anything, wait until your device powers up fully, now close itunes and any other dialogue boxes that are open )

3. Thats it, leave device connected if you need to charge up, if you want to sync to itunes just re-open itunes now, otherwise it is now safe to disconnect from usb cable

Ive now recently jailbroken a few devices, an iphone 3gs, iphone 3g, ipod touch 2g, and today an ipod touch 2g mc, if your worried about trying a tethered jailbreak, trust me its no big deal, just try to keep your device well charged at all times, but if you have to reboot, the whole process only takes about a minute, and is easy, it should'nt put you off!

Im pretty sure there will be updates in future for an untethered jailbreak for these devices, stay tuned.

How To Fix Problems With Push Notifications After Blacksn0w Unlock

If you are experiencing problems with push notifications on your iphone, after using blacksn0w to unlock 05.11.07 baseband, try this simple fix ;

1. Reset network settings first as described here

2. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

3. This will now update all your sources in Cydia

4. Now select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

push fix

5. Restart iphone by holding down power and home button, when prompted slide to turn off, leave fully switched off for 5 seconds, now hold power button until apple logo appears, let it power up

How To Fix Problems With Wifi / Gps / Youtube After Blacksn0w Unlock

If your one of the many iphone users who have just unlocked their 05.11.07 baseband with blacksn0w, you may have encountered some problems. Some users are reporting issues such as, wifi dropping out and not picking up signal again, gps not working, youtube app not working as it should. If you are one of these unlucky few, there is a simple fix which has worked for most, follow these instructions ;

1. On iphone select ;

Settings / General / Reset / Reset Network Settings

2. You will now be prompted with "Reset Network Settings" button, select it

3. Hard re-boot your iphone, hold down the home and power button, when prompted, slide to turn off

4. Turn device back on by holding down power button until apple logo appears

Thats it, you should be back up and running, unless of course your one of the very unfortunate few who have reported that every time they re-boot, they get the same problems again! If this is you, follow procedure again, but dont switch off device.

How To Protect Your Jailbroken iPhone From SSH Hack

Recently a dutch hacker found a way to access users iphones, getting in via open ssh, and locking their devices with a message displayed on their screens telling them to pay $5 by paypal in order to get back use of their device. The hacker has since had a change of heart, and has refunded some people, and sent instructions out to others to show them how to unlock their devices. Never the less, its been done, and could be done again!

If you are jailbroken and have ssh installed on your iphone, then you need to up your security. Most users dont even change the password from 'alpine', remember you're sharing this password with possibly thousands of hackers, when you hear it like that it, doesn't make sense not to does it?

Simple things can help, like having sbsettings or bossprefs installed from Cydia, that way you can toggle ssh off easily whenever not in use, if its not switched on, nobody can get access into your device. As stated above, I would also recommend changing your passwords for your ssh client, to do this follow these instructions ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

mobile terminal

2. Respring your device

3. Open mobile terminal app

4. Type in and enter the following ;

passwd

alpine

your new password ( This must be 5 characters minimum )

your new password

su root

alpine

passwd

your new password ( This must be 5 characters minimum )

your new password

NOTE ;

This changes the mobile and root password, in that order, so the next time you open winscp you will need to enter the new password. The two passwords can be the same, or different if you choose.

5. Exit mobile terminal

Its that easy! And with people recently getting hacked and blackmailed through ssh, its definately worth doing!

How To Unlock 05.11.07 Baseband With Blacksn0w

Here are step by step instructions on how to unlock your iphone on firmware 3.1.2 with baseband 05.11.07, using Geohots new blacksn0w, there are a few different ways to do it depending on what state your device is in at the moment, read on ;

If you are needing a full update, jailbreak, and unlock ;

1. Make sure you are running the latest iTunes

2. Connect your iphone to pc via usb and update and restore to firmware 3.1.2

3. Download blackra1n Rc3 to your desktop, for windows or mac

4. Make sure all other programs are closed and that your device is connected via usb.

5. Click on blackra1n.

6. Click run.

7. Click make it ra1n.

This will now put your device into recovery, if itunes opens telling you you need to restore because your device is in recovery mode, just click ok, then close down itunes.

When a picture of Geohot appears on your device screen, jailbreak is done, your device will now restart as normal, the whole jailbreak process will only take approx 30 seconds, again itunes will open, just close it down

8. Blackra1n.app will now be on your device springboard.

9. Open blackra1n, this will bring up an installation screen, here you can select to install one or all of these ; Cydia / Rock / Blacksn0w, you also get the option to delete blackra1n, this doesnt remove the jailbreak, it just removes the blackra1n installation app from your springboard, and dont worry, Cydia etc will still be installed.

10. Install Cydia / Respring device

11. Open app again and this time install blacksn0w, this will automatically unlock and respring your device for use with any carrier, enjoy.

If you are already jailbroken with blackra1n Rc1 or Rc2 and still have the app on your springboard, and are on 3.1.2 firmware ;

1. Open blackra1n.app, select ra1n (which is now in place of Icy), let your device respring, this basically updates your software in preperation for unlock

2. Open blackra1n.app again, select sn0w (which is now in place of ra1n), this will automatically unlock and respring your device

If you are already jailbroken with blackra1n or pwnage tool, and dont have the app on your springboard, and are on 3.1.2 firmware ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Manage / Sources / Edit / Add / Type in and install ;

This will automatically unlock and respring your device

Geohot Releases Blacksn0w A Day Earlier

Geohot stated earlier on twitter that due to testing going so well, he was going to bring sn0wday forward by a day, blacksn0w and RC3 blackra1n will now be released on 03/11/09, with an estimated release time at noon. So you aint got long to wait!

As you will all know, blacksn0w is the unlock tool, and blackra1n is the jailbreak tool.

Here is a list of the main new features ;

a) Unlocks the 05.11.07 baseband

b) Enables internet tethering on 3.1.2

c) 15 second speed increase on jailbreak

d) Hacktivation support

e) Tiger+PPC support

There will be a few different ways to update or install depending on what state your device is at currently ;

1. If you are a new jailbreaker, just about to upgrade to 3.1.2, then download the blackra1n tool to your pc desktop, and run jailbreak. After jailbreak you will have blackra1n.app on your springboard, open this and notice that as well as an option to install Cydia or Rock, there will now also be blacksn0w, if you want to unlock just select this, easy.

2. If you are already jailbroken with blackra1n and still have the blackra1n.app on your springboard, open this and notice Icy will now be replaced with ra1n, select this to update the software on your device. If you also want to unlock, open app again and now blacksn0w will be present, select this to run unlock.

3. If you are already jailbroken, but have deleted blackra1n.app, or have used pwnage tool, never fear, blacksn0w will be released via Cydia also later today.

Doom Classic

The gates to hell have once again opened! Doom is back, this time on iphone but keeping all its original glory. Doom is the first person shooter that defined a future generation of shooters.

You play as a space marine who is stationed on mars, it is your mission to destroy all the alien scum and prevent them from invading earth.

Doom Classic is in 3D with a retro feel to it, it has 4 episodes to play across 36 levels, each increasing in difficulty the further you get into the game.

When you open the game you are presented with 6 options ;

1. Resume Game ; Continue your game from where you last left it

2. New Game ; Start a new game

3. Demos ; This plays videos to show how to play the game

4. Multiplayer ; Join up with up to 4 players over local wifi to play co-op campaign, or deathmatch against each other

5. Website ; This directs you to the developers website

6. Options ; Choose from 3 different control types, and customise the interface to suit yourself

During gameplay the controls are very easy to master, simply use the onscreen joypad(s) to move your character around the levels, press the shoot button to fire weapons, to open doors etc just touch them onscreen as your character walks up to them.

Dotted around each level are many pickups eg. weapons / ammo / health / armour, you WILL need these to survive the latter levels. All the original weapons are still here as well to add even more gore to the gameplay, like the chainsaw and the Bfg 9000.

Overall, if you liked the original, you'll love this version which has been ported over to iphone, it looks and plays great ( if you like retro gaming ), and allows you to play music from your ipod list if you so wish. There are plenty of single player levels to keep you entertained for many hours, and the multiplayer will also add longevity to its lifespan.

I'd rate this game 9/10

Twidget is basically a tweak that adds a widget to your lockscreen that displays details of your twitter account ;

a) Your timeline, you can scroll up and down to view all your messages

b) There is a status bar to refresh or change your timeline to ;

This app works in addition to your normal twitter client, it is not a stand alone client. When installed it will not effect any other apps you have installed. It has just been updated and is available in Cydia via the iSpazio repo.

If you want to try it follow the instructions below ;

qTweeter

The main benefit of this app is it allows you to update your twitter or facebook accounts from within other apps, no need to close down the app your currently using anymore, it is not a replacement for your standalone twitter and facebook clients, it works along side them. It is called qTweeter.

It uses a simple pull down function to open the app, simply slide your finger down the screen vertically from the status bar, the dialogue box will slide down with your finger and the keyboard at the same time will scroll up from the bottom of the screen. Dont worry if you use SBSettings, the app automatically changes it so it now opens with a horizontal swipe across the status bar instead of vertical.

On opening the app for the first time, via its icon on the springboard, you will need to enter your account login details, there are also settings to change the in app backgrounds and sounds.

After opening the app with the swipe feature, simply enter your text and send, to update your twitter and facebook accounts. When finished simply push the dialogue box back up into the status bar, and again at the same time, the keyboard will scroll down and away. This app can be used for more though than just text, here are some more features ;

a) Ability to upload photos or videos directly

b) During playback of any track in your ipod library, automatically upload details of the track and a link to iTunes for people to listen to and purchase it

c) Whilst browsing on safari, automatically upload details and a link to the web page so others can also view it

d) Whilst viewing a uTube video, automatically upload details and a link to the video so others can also view it

All in all this app is a great addition to your social networking setup. The ability to update your accounts without needing to close your current application is fantastic, and its apps like these that make me jailbreak my devices. The only concern some people have commented on, is more drain on battery life, my 3gs has no such problems but that may not be the same for all.

I'd give this app 9/10.

How To Install Voice Control On iPhone 1G / 3G On 3.1.2

If you follow these instructions it will give you a fully working Voice Control feature on your iPhone, it will allow you to play songs, dial a number etc all via voice control.

If you own an iPhone 3GS then you will already have this feature available, if you have an iPhone 1G or 3G then this will work for you, it doesnt work on iPod Touch at all.

NOTE ;

a) Your iphone must be jailbroken and on 3.1.2 firmware

b) Your iphone must have ssh installed

c) Your pc must have winscp and winraar installed

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

appflow

2. Exit cydia

3. On pc go to ;

4. Scroll down and download Voice Control to your desktop / unzip

5. Enable ssh on iphone

9. Right click Voice Control folder and do the following ;

Properties / Make sure permissions are set to 0755 / Tick, set group owner and permissions recursively / ok

11. You will now have two icons on your springboard, AppFlow which you installed earlier, and Voice Control

NOTE :

You can now operate voice control via its icon, you can however make it work a bit more similar to the iphone 3gs, by opening the application via the home button, to do this follow these simple instructions ;

a) Open AppFlow

b) Scroll down and select Voice Control

c) Select Assign to double tap

d) Exit AppFlow

e) Double click home button, and voice control now opens

This really does work and will make your iphone 1G or 3G operate a lot more like its newer brother, the 3GS. Please note though that it isnt perfect, it doesnt work 100% of the time and is not as responsive as the 3GS, but if you like the idea of having voice control on your device then its worth a try.

Geohot Has First Unlock On 05.11.07 Baseband, Blacksn0w!

Geohot has done it again, after only a few days at work he has unlocked the first iPhone in the world running 05.11.07 baseband, its name ? Blacksn0w, and he has given a release date of 04/11/09. It will work on both the iPhone 3G & 3GS, and will work on any carrier, sounds good, and not long to wait for it!

Will Apple Give Go Ahead For Google Maps Navigation?

Google and Apple have recently come into conflict over a couple of applications, like Google Voice and Google Latitude.

Apple claimed these apps would duplicate the core functionality of the iphone.

Will Google Maps Navigation fall under the same category we wonder?

Intro ;

The iphone earbuds have a built in microphone you can use for hands free calling. The microphone is also a button-you simply squeeze it and you'll hear a click!

This button provides quick access to a variety of features, depending upon what is currently happening on the phone.

48. Controlling Calls

You can use the earbud button to control the phone.

When the phone is ringing ;

a) Click once to answer the call

b) Press and hold for 2 seconds, then release to reject the incoming call. You'll hear two soft beeps to confirm you've declined the call

Whilst on a call ;

a) Click once to end the current call

If your already on a call and another call comes in ;

a) Click once to switch to the new call

b) Click again to switch between 2 active calls

c) Press and hold for 2 seconds, then let go to switch to the new call and end the current call

49. Controlling Music Playback

You can also use the microphone button to control playback when music or videos are playing in the ipod application ;

a) Click once to pause the current song or video

b) Click again to resume

c) Quickly click twice to skip to the next song

d) Quickly click 3 times to skip to the previous song, or to restart the current track if you are more than 3 seconds in

50. OS3.x & 3GS Enhancements

In OS3.x, the microphone button also starts and stops recording in the voice memo application.

The iphone 3GS microphone has some additional features ;

a) Volume +/- buttons control volume of calls and audio playback

How To Install Mame Emulator & Roms On 3.1.2

This will allow you to play Mame games on your iPhone / iPod Touch, though personally I think this only really works on the iPhone 3GS, on other devices the lag and sound is terrible, I know I've tried it on them all. Feel free though to try for yourself. The best games to try are things like 1942, Ghouls & Ghosts etc. This is the most recent version ( mame4iphone 1.5.0 ), and the overall look and feel of the emulator has been improved, and best of all, its free!

NOTES ;

a) Device must be jailbroken

b) Device must have SSH installed

c) PC must have winscp and winraar installed

Installation Instructions ;

1. Open Cydia, this new mame4iphone is available via public repo's so will already be available, no need to add extra repo's

2. Now select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

mame4iphone

3. Exit Cydia / The app will now be on your springboard but will need the game roms added via ssh

4. On your pc go to ;

5. Scroll down the left hand column and select mame roms

6. Browse for desired game roms

( Some roms are in 1 part, others need 2 or 3 parts downloaded )

7. Download roms to desktop, these will be in zip format, they stay in zip format and are ssh'd that way ;

a) Single zips are ssh'd just as they are onto iphone

b) Multiple part zips need to be altered to make a single zip to ssh onto iphone

eg ;

c) Download 1942 zips to desktop in the order they appear ; Set1 / Set2 / Set3

d) Double click the set2 zip / highlight all files inside it / drag and drop into set1 zip / now delete set2 zip as it isnt needed anymore

e) Double click the set3 zip / highlight all files inside it / drag and drop into set1 zip / now delete set3 zip as it isnt needed anymore

f) Set1 zip is now complete and ready to be ssh'd onto iphone

8. Enable ssh on iphone

9. Open winscp on pc and login to your device

11. Drag and drop the completed zip files into this folder / copy

12. Exit winscp and disable ssh

15. Open app and select new game, this should play if you have done everything correctly

( On first try of each game you may need to press right on d-pad to get it started, be patient, some times it takes a minute or two to respond )

As I stated earlier this does work, this is also the latest version of mame, but, it is fiddly and isnt as easy to set up as other emulators, but once working, some of the games are great fun.

Geohot earlier today announced on twitter he was going to go ahead and start trying to find an exploit that will enable him to create an unlock tool, he sounds very confident that he will get a result. He has already found one exploit, but then tweeted to say it wasnt good enough for the job and he would continue looking, to be finding exploits within a couple of hours is very promising.

In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed, I have no doubt he will succeed, and when he does we will post all the relevant details, stay tuned.

How To Install Sega Genesis Emulator on 3.1.2

If you follow these instructions it will give you a working SEGA GENESIS emulator which you can add as many games to as you want, the 3gs will obviously run this smoother and more responsive but it does also work on all other devices

a) This will work for all devices that are running 3.1.2 latest firmware, but you must be jailbroken

c) Must have winscp and winraar installed on your pc

How To Fix Missing Carrier Name On 3gs 3.1.2 After Using Pwnage Tool

Some iphone 3gs owners may have found that after installing a custom 3.1.2 firmware created by pwnage tool, the carrier name / logo is missing from the status bar.

This is probably due to the baseband not being updated, pwnage tool keeps the old baseband, 4.26.08, after updating. This is to benefit those who need an unlock as well as a jailbreak.

Some users may have used MakeItMine via Cydia, although this is an easy fix, if you ever need to use the iphones roaming feature the carrier name wont change.

A simple tweak is now available via Cydia and the Big Boss Repo ;

a) Open Cydia and select ;

Search / Type in and install ;

Carrier Logo Fixer

b) Exit cydia and reboot device

c) Your carrier name / logo should now be present

If this is a problem you have encountered, give this a try.

UPDATE ;

Some people have reported issues after trying this, carrier logo shows up, but displays a different carrier to the one being used, im sorry to say I dont know how to resolve this as I havent needed to do this myself, if I can find a solution ill update asap.

George Hotz has just released an RC2 version of his popular blackra1n jailbreak tool. This has fixed a few known issues some people were having trying to run the tool ;

The ripdev team is no longer in the iphone development business, over the past couple of years they have had some successful releases like Installer and Icy, these and all there other software packages are still available to download but will only work on the firmware they were created for, no updates will be made in future, the doors are now closed. No reasons have been given at this stage, but here is a copy of their last statement from their site ;

There are many reasons for this, most of which we probably will never disclose (unless we are forced to). The important thing is that due to circumstances we will likely be unable to support the titles we have created over the years further. EarthWorm Jim

This app is great, its a remake of the playstation 1 classic from many years ago, its retro gaming at its best.

Whats Jims Story?

Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very normal earthworm things. One day, during a battle in outer space, a suit dropped to earth and landed on Jim, mutating him into a large and intelligent ( for an earthworm anyhow ) super hero. When Jim learned of the evil plans of Psy-Crow, and Queen Slug For A Butt, he decided to rescue Princess Whats Her Name.

This is a 2D side scrolling platform/action game. Graphics are pleasing and very much like the original playstation title. Controls can be tricky until you get used to them, which takes a level or two to achieve.

To move Jim around his environments there is a joypad in the bottom left corner of the screen. There are also 3 main buttons for his actions positioned on the right hand side ;

a) Jump - Jump up and down onto different platforms

b) Fire - Fires your currently equiped weapon at your enemies

c) Swing - Swing from hooks and ledges

Run, jump, shoot, launch cows, bungie, and rocket your way through up to 16 levels which increase in difficulty.

There are 12 types of enemies and 9 different bosses.

Choose between 4 different difficulty settings.

Play original classic tunes or your own ipod playlist during game play.

Overall, looks and plays great but can be quite challenging which should add to the games lifespan. A must have for any retro gamers among you, 9/10.

Sniper vs Sniper Online

Ive waited patiently for this game since I watched a video demo a few weeks ago.

The basic idea of the game is to look around different scenery and shoot any enemy snipers you come across, before they kill you. To make it more difficult civilians etc are dotted around to try to confuse you, you fail missions if you shoot them by mistake.

On opening the app for the first time, you will be asked to enter an online gamername and password, this is to set up an account for you to use their online servers. This is a one time setup and everytime you open the app after that you'll just be connected straight to the servers if you choose to.

The main menu presents the options and game modes.

1. Single player ;

This allows you to choose 1 of 6 different scenes to play, most of which are locked until you complete the training field mission. You then choose a game mode ;

a) Campaign mode

Here you are given a series of tasks to complete per area, each increasing in difficulty, when completed you move on to the next mission

b) 1 vs 1

This is a timed challenge, you will be asked for example to shoot down 10 snipers within 5 minutes without any civilian casualties

c) Special missions

This will give you a further 5 or 6 missions, these will all have different tasks to complete within time limits

2. Online play ;

This allows you to take your challenge globally, compete against anyone from around the world via wifi, join or create your own game to play.

a) 1 vs 1

Hunt down and shoot all your foes snipers before they kill you, the results of each game will effect your global rank

b) Alliance attack

Team up with other players to destroy all the enemy snipers, you will be awarded scores depending on your performance

c) Friends list

Team up with your friends

After each online match you can post your scores directly to your facebook and twitter accounts.

Overall, I like this game, the online matches add a bit of tension, the single player missions can be quite tricky, but not too hard to put you off. Graphics are good, not great, and controls are easy to master. Its a basic tilt and shoot mechanism, tilt to move view around the screen, there are 3 touch screen buttons for the different views ;

a) Eye view

This is a full screen view of the entire area

b) Binoculars view

This zooms in but does allow you to pan a wider area

c) Sights

This zooms right in for better accuracy for your shot, when in this view another button appears to fire your weapon.

I rate this game 8/10

iBluetooth For 3.1.X Firmware Coming

iBluetooth is an app that has probably been used at some point by most of us that jailbreak our devices, and the reason? One of the main short fallings of the iphone is the inability to transfer files via bluetooth between devices, ( other than just other iphones ). The standard setup of an iphone does not permit this, all it allows is connection to bluetooth hands free kits etc.

Well the developer MeDevil, a member of the dev team, has confirmed he is still working on a new version of iBluetooth that will support the latest 3.1.X firmware. This app will again only be available to the jailbreak community via Cydia store due to Apples many restrictions.

This app enables users to transfer files ( eg photos / music / videos ), from their iphone to any other bluetooth device. It also comes complete with a very handy built in file viewer which enables you to view files sent to and from your device.

No eta has been given yet, but this is a copy of a recent statement by MeDevil ;

I would say to all that I’m still working on iBluetooth version 2 (no, i didn’t run away with money) . As said before, version 2 will be compatible with FW 3.x and with iPhone 2g, 3g, 3gs & ipod touch 2g. I had to stop development this summer because of personal problem. No date defined right now, will try to release it as soon as it’s usable. Thank you for your patience.

New Free Cydia Tethering Package Available

I posted a blog a few days ago explaining a little about what tethering is and how to set it up, (Unofficially), well a developer called Andre Sendowski, has just released a free tethering package via Cydia. This is still in beta format so install and use at your own risk, there could be bugs.

Its a very easy set up but again I also have to stress, carriers can be very aggressive towards tethering and as a result you could end up with a huge bill, so use wisely and carefully.

Firewall App Coming To iPhone Soon?

A firewall app for iphone is currently in development and should hopefully hit the Cydia store within the next couple of weeks.

The app runs in the background via MobileSubstrate. After installation an icon will appear on your springboard, this can be used to set user access permissions for all your apps.

The purpose of the app is to warn iphone users whenever an application tries to access the app store or your confidential data, like contacts, Unique Identifier ( UDID ) etc.

This will be good news to a lot of iphone users in the light of recent reports regarding iphone applications spying on users private data!

According to a recent tweet by Joe Hewitt (developer of the popular iPhone app Facebook), the next update to the Facebook app, will be version 3.1, and the update will include push notifications!

Facebook with push notifications is a great idea, but is it for the people with 300+ friends? No, but luckily, there will be a option for the notifications. What do we mean by this? Don’t you hate logging into Facebook, and having over 20 new notifications? Yeah, us too. Just imagine having all those notifications coming in together, for those with not so many friends on their lists, this will be a great addition.

You cannot use unauthorized Internet Tethering on 3.1, unless it is approved by your carrier. You can use third party software, such as: iModem when it is jailbroken!

How To Delete Cydia Apps From Springboard

As you all know, normally to remove an app you previously installed via Cydia can be a bit of a drag. You have to open Cydia and go to ; manage / packages / modify / remove, and then wait for the app to be fully removed before you can exit Cydia.

Well good news, CyDelete is back, its been updated and is now available in Cydia. Once installed on your device it gives you the ability to delete Cydia apps directly from your springboard, just like app store apps, by holding down the app icon until an X appears in the corner which you then press to delete.

CyDelete v2.0.1 brings some new features ;

a) Completely re-written core

New iPhone 3GS Will Be Stuck With A Tethered Jailbreak

I posted a blog a few days ago commenting on the fact that the new iPhone 3GS currently being shipped out for sale had been updated with a different iBoot, and that this would plug the current 24kpwn exploit being used by all jailbreaking programms at the minute.

Well its been confirmed by the Dev Team, they have recently stated that the new models will only have a tethered jailbreak option until a new exploit is found, and that this could take some time!

This is indeed bad news for anyone just buying an iphone, for the rest of us, just dont rush to push that update button in future!

Updates For Orbit Already In Development

Are you one of the many who have downloaded and currently using Orbit ( Expose for iPhone ) ?Impressed? Well it could be about to get even better. The developer is already working on updates, so whats new?

1. When you open Orbit and the screen displays all your springboard pages, it will now also show spotlight, ( the iPhone search feature )

2. As well as opening Orbit by selecting its icon, you will now be able to open it with a simple pinch anywhere on the screen.

So for those of us already using Orbit, good things ahead I think, if your not, why not? Give it a try, especially if you have lots of apps on your device, it'll make life a lot easier.

Multitasking, Switching Between Apps In Development

The developer Steven Troughton Smith, is indeed keeping himself busy. With popular releases under his belt already like Orbit and Stack, he continues to work on new projects.

Multitasking is basically the ability to view on screen all your currently running apps, this is done by double clicking the home button, making it fast and easy to switch between running apps.

There is not much information available at the minute or an eta, but watch this space and we will try to keep you posted.

How To Install iDashboard Beta

Stephen Smith the creator of Orbit and Stack has also just created a beta of iDashboard.

This is the iphone equivalent of dashboard on Mac OS X, it allows access to widgets such as the analogue clock, translator, calculator etc.

Currently only calculator and clock are available, but in future other widgets will be implemented.

If you want to give it a try, use the instructions below but remember, this is still in beta format and therefore might be buggy and a bit cumbersome, and at worst might require you to restore your device, so think carefully! Future releases will get better.

NOTES ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken

b) You must have winterboard installed

How To Change Theme Icons

Ever installed a new theme and been a bit dissapointed that not all your icons were changed ?

Well a lot of these themes have a lot of icons included that you are not using for the apps you have installed, but maybe if you changed the names of some of these icons you may be able to use them.

Follow these instructions and you can browse these icons and if you find any suitable, change their name to suit your apps.

NOTE ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken

b) Your device must have ssh and winterboard installed

c) Your pc must have iFunBox installed

Instructions

1. Connect your device to pc via usb

2. Open iFunBox ( Make sure your device is listed )

3. In left hand column select ;

a) + next to your device

b) + next to Raw File System

c) + next to Stash

d) + next to Themes

e) + next to the theme you have installed and want to edit

f) + next to Icons

4. In right hand column browse for and highlight icon you want to rename

5. Right click icon / Rename icon

( Make sure the new name is exactly the same as the app name you want it for )

6. Repeat this for all the icons you need

7. Exit iFunBox

8. Reboot device, your icons should now be renamed

How To Install Gamboy Advance Emulator On 3.1.2

GPSPhone is a gameboy advance emulator, it has different skins to choose from, one looks like a wii remote. No game roms are included with the emulator so these have to be downloaded via the internet and ssh'd into your device. The game graphics and sound play very smoothly especially on a 3gs.

b) Device must have ssh installed

c) Pc must have winscp and winraar installed

HOW TO EDIT SYSTEM STRINGS ( THE EASIEST WAY )

This allows you to edit your system text, ( eg Slide To Unlock ), to anything you like, ( eg Jailbroken ). ( See picture )

You can change as many different paths as you like but please follow the instructions as you could crash your device if you input text wrongly

NOTE :

Your device must be jailbroken and running 3.0 - 3.1 firmware

Installation Instructions ;

1. Open cydia and select ;

Search / Type in: ifile /Install /Exit cydia

2. Open ifile

3. When the app is first opened press the button in the top left hand corner until it takes you back as far as it will go

4. Now select ;

System / Library / Core services / Springboard.app / English.iproj / Springboard.strings / Edit

5. Scroll down to desired string ( eg Slide to unlock )

6. Delete the original text but only between the " " (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)

7. Type in new text of your choice ( eg Jailbroken )

8. When finished Select:

Save / Done

9. Exit ifile and restart iphone

10. Now on lock screen it will say ( eg Jailbroken )

How To Install vWallpaper On 3.0 - 3.1

vWallpaper has just been updated to suit 3.0 - 3.1 firmwares, it allows you to install video wallpapers instead of static images. This is a great app and there are loads of video wallpapers out there to choose from depending on your taste.

NOTE ;

a) Your device must be jailbroken and running 3.0 or 3.1 latest firmware, ssh also needs to be installed if you want to add more video wallpapers from the internet

b) Your pc must have winscp installed, and winraar might be needed to unzip from some internet sites

Installation Instructions ;

1. Open Cydia and select ;

Search / type in vwallpaper / Install

2. Exit Cydia

3. Open vwallpaper and select ;

Video wallpaper / switch enable video on / select a video / done / Exit

4. Your device will respring, open springboard, video will now be working in background

To Install Different vWallpapers From PC ;

How To Un-brick Your iPhone / iPod Touch

If your device is bricked, eg stuck on black screen, bright white screen, boot logo etc, and wont boot up at all, then follow these instructions to put your device into DFU Mode and get it working again and back to factory settings.

1. Download required firmware to desktop

2. Open iTunes

3. Connect your bricked device via usb

( If any windows open in iTunes just close them )

4. On your device ;

a) Hold down the power and home button for approx 10 seconds ( You'll hear a chime on pc )

b) Release power button but continue to hold down home button for approx 10 seconds ( Again you should hear a chime on pc ) let go of home button now

5. A window should now open in iTunes telling you it has detected a device in recovery mode and it needs to be restored so ;

a) Click ok

b) Hold down the shift button and press restore

c) Browse for the firmware you downloaded and select it

6. iTunes will now restore your device back to factory settings and into a working condition again, this really is a get out of jail free!

Battery Life

32. Turn Bluetooth Off

Bluetooth adds significant drain to the battery, and if you are not using a hands free kit then you may as well turn it off. With bluetooth enabled an icon appears in the status bar. Its quite hard to see from the home screen but a lot easier against the light status bar used by most apps.

To turn bluetooth off, tap settings, the general, then bluetooth, and tap the on/off switch

33. Turn Push E-Mail Off

Keeping push e-mail turned off can save quite a lot of juice, particularly in areas with a poor signal. Go to settings, fetch new data, and turn push off and fetch data manually

34. Turn Automatic Wifi Off

Stop your phone from searching for networks anytime you are using an internet application. Go to settings, select wifi, and simply turn it off

35. Turn Off EQ

Equalization enhances key frequencies to suit certain types of music. It also requires a lot of processing power, and you can extend your battery life whilst listening to music by turning it off;

a) On the iphone, go into settings, ipod and set EQ to off

b) On the ipod touch, go into settings, music and set EQ to off

c) If youve set EQ differently for specific songs in itunes, off wont work so set EQ to flat instead

36. Close Applications

To ensure that your phone is using as little battery as possible, you should press the home button before locking so that no app remains running. This is especially true of any applications that make heavy use of GPS, such as google maps, or the 3G or wifi connection, such as safari

37. Save Power For Calls

Away from charge? If you need a working phone for making and receiving calls, reduce your use of ;

a) Applications, particularly those that use the 3G, GPS or both.

b) Games, these can use a lot of power

c) The iPod, video is particularly draining on the battery

38. Save Power For iPod

If you want to conserve juice for use as an iPod and you dont need the phone to be working, put it in airplane mode. This will turn off all the power hungry features such as the 3G data connection and phone. You can save even more power by turning off wifi. This will extend the time it'll work as an iPod

In App Purchases In Free Apps?

Apple recently announced that all iphone app developers will now be able to use the in app purchase system for free apps as well, in the past this has only been available for paid applications.

What exactly does this mean?

a) No More Lite Versions;

Developers can now ( If they choose to ), package their whole app under a free title, letting you try it, then if you really like it purchase it, just unlock the full game / app through the in app purchase system.

b) The End Of Piracy ?;

Probably not, but it will make it more difficult. Since in app purchases are verified through Apple to check that your account has in fact purchased the feature before being unlocked, it wont be as easy anymore as just finding and adding a cracked .ipa file.

c) No More "40 Free Prestige Points" Littering The Free Apps Section;

Developers for those MMO games can now sell these through the app itself

How To Rename Cydia Apps

This app allows you to change the name of any apps you have installed via Cydia / Icy etc

The app used to enable this is called Rename2, it is available via Cydia by using the following repo ;

Its very simple to use once installed on your device, open up Rename2 and select the app you want to change the name of from a list, enter the new name, select rename, then exit the app, thats it, try it out.

How To Install NES3 Emulator On 3.1.2 Devices

Stack V3 Alpha2 Released

Stack V3 has been released for those of you who are willing to try it out and contribute if you like what you see.

Stacks basically resembles mac stacks, but for iphone, click on an icon in your dock and multiple icons will spring up from it, its a quick way to get to your favourites if you have a lot of apps on your device.

Whats new in alpha 2;

a) Multiple stacks

b) Dimming of screen when opening a stack

c) Reflective dock support

d) Support for iTunes 9 app management

e) Stack update notifications

f) New grid view animations

g) Stacks are findable to open using spotlight

Please keep in mind, this is still in alpha stage of testing so there will be bugs and glitches, so install at your own risk.

If you want to go ahead at this stage and try it, there are many sets of instructions I have found, ( but wont post), so be carefull, as you can see in the pictures, I installed an older version of stack via cydia which worked great, but it only installs one stack, try that first to make sure you like it. When I later tried to install the alpha version it crashed my device resulting in another restore, but there have been numerous successes according to many posts, maybe its just me!

Watch the video and decide for yourself, try now or wait for a Cydia release, the one thing I will say, is it looks great!

Steven Troughton Smith, a twenty year old independant iPhone developer, has just created Expose, this is basically like Spaces on mac, but on your iPhone.

Its not yet available as its in its final stages of development, with some last minute modifications and tweaks to be made, but we hope to see it soon.

IM+ With Speech Recognition

IM+ 3.4 has just been released in the app store, we all know that this is a great instant messaging app with push notifications which can be used with the likes of twitter / skype / facebook / msn etc etc, but this update has come with a bit of a hidden gem.

Open the app and go into settings, and you will see a section named speech recognition. This gives you the option of buying (in app) the ability to use speech to text for all your favourite social networking sites. It costs 59p, but this has to be renewed every month if you like it.

Ive purchased it and tried it and have to say it works quite well, not prefect, but good. Ill stick with it for a month to thoroughly test it out, give it a try yourselves, speek clearly and you will be surprised how well it works, up to now I'de have to mark it 7/10.

Pogo Plank Provides New iPhone User Interface

Pogo Plank, is currently available to buy in Cydia for $1:99. It replaces the traditional iPhone pages of icons with a wheel of user defined categories.

Each category can be named by the user, and contained within each category icon is a list of applications, this is configured with the PPSettings app.

Once set up, you can scroll through the wheel to find the category you want, (eg social networking), tap the folder icon, and up pops a list of applications to choose from, (eg facebook, twitter).

I think it looks quite neat but im gonna wait for more reviews before I try it, if you've tried it or plan to, please let me know your thoughts on it.

The Return Of Earthworm Jim

Gameloft have just released this video demo of their upcoming game for iPhone / iPod Touch, EarthWorm Jim.

This really is a blast from the past, anybody that owned a Playstation 1 will remember the first outing for this classic game!

Its basically a side scrolling platform game in 2D, make your way through different levels which increase in difficulty as you progress, defeat enemies, overcome obstacles and puzzles along your way.

This will be a great addition to Gamelofts already impressive list of titles, going off this video, it looks and sounds great, lets hope for a quick release.

Apple Developing Radio App For iPhone

Allegedly according to some recent reports, Apple is building a new app for its iPhone and iPod Touch that will bring FM Radio to the devices.

"Not such a new idea", you might say, with such Apps as Wunder Radio present which can already stream internet radio to your device.

The difference is that Apple's will have similar functionality to that of its newly released iPod Nano, with the ability to pause live FM transmissions and fast forward when you resume play.

Apparently, the delay in getting the App to the App Store is Apple's decision to intergrate it with the iTunes Store, which is built into the devices. With this intergration, you will be able to tap on a song you hear on the radio and buy it through iTunes.

Personally, I already use Wunder Radio, but must admit if Apple release this new App, I'll be trading it in!

Apple Fights Back At Hackers

Apples cat and mouse game continues with the iPhone hacking community, with Apple now shipping out updated versions of the current iPhone 3gs to prevent tampering.

Apple has apparently updated the BootROM for the iPhone 3gs to iBoot-359.32. If this is the case it means the exploit currently being used, known as "24kpwn", will no longer allow users to run unauthorised code on the iPhone OS.

MuscleNerd, a member of the Dev Team, noted "This is the first time ever that Apple has done a BootROM update in the middle of a product line without a new hardware model."

So in the mean time, all you jailbreakers out there, or anybody that is thinking of jailbreaking for the first time, make sure to future proof yourself now ( see earlier posts on grabbing ECID and SHSH files ), to make sure you always have the option of jailbreaking.

If your buying a new model that has been updated, keep your fingers crossed that Geohot / The Dev Team / or the Chronic Dev Team will find a new hole to exploit!!!

How To Bypass Apples Signature Server

What this process actually does is duplicates the functionality exposed by Apples signature server, except using "on file" results rather than live requests. All we need then is to make iTunes use it, using the following file and instructions we can re-direct requests to Apples signature server to Cydia instead.

1. Find the file ;

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

2. Now right click the host file and make sure you un-select "Read Only" then apply

3. Now right click on notepad and select "Run As Administrator"

4. This will open notepad, now ;

Browse again for hosts file

( You may need to change text, to all files in the bottom right hand corner if it doesnt display )

5. Open hosts file and at the bottom on a new line enter ;

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

6. Now save and exit

7. To be safe you might now want to go back and right click hosts file and select "Read Only" again and apply

If you succeed then from now on when iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead.

This means that you will be able to downgrade in future to any firmware that you have an on file shsh for, this is why it is so important to grab your shsh for every firmware update, because the next one could be patched by Apple to plug the currently used exploit, and if thats the case, guess what, you can downgrade again to get back your jailbreak.

3.1.2 SHSH Grabber

This tool has just been released by iH8sn0w, it is called iReb and can be downloaded here.

Since blackra1n came out, users were able to jailbreak again with the latest firmware 3.1.2, but I imagine Apple will very soon patch the exploit currently being used thus preventing you from future jailbreaks. To future proof yourself so you can always use this exploit you need to grab your shsh files and put them on Sauriks server, this would enable you to downgrade your firmware and re-jailbreak if you accidentally pushed the update button in itunes. This tool will do this for you, just make sure to get your ecid code before starting, look at my earlier posts if you dont know how to.

1. Download iReb 3.1.2

2. Open iReb and select ;

3.1.2 SHSH Grabber For iPod Touch 2nd Gen / iPod Touch 3rd Gen / iPhone 3G(S)

3. ( Make sure you have Java Runtime installed on your pc )

This procedure is only for iPhone 3gs users who are already on firmware 3.1.x, and are interested in getting their certificate in order to future proof their device for jailbreaks. If Apple ever plug the exploits used for jailbreaking, this will make it possible to downgrade firmware again to re-jailbreak, as Apple prevent this normally. This needs to be done with every firmware update to stay safe.

1. Put your iphone into recovery mode by following this procedure ;

a) Turn your device completely off

b) Hold down the home button

c) Whilst holding down the home button, connect to your pc via usb

d) Keep holding down the home button until you see the connect to itunes screen on your device, you are now in recovery mode

e) If itunes opens just close it down

2. Open usbview

3. Navigate to Applications>Utilities>and start "System Profiler"

4. This will open a new screen and you select "USB" from the block on the left, then click on "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)" and several numbers appear

5. Copy the small 16 digit ECID code

6. To escape recovery mode and power down your device, simply hold down the power and home buttons for ten seconds

NOTE ;

iPod touch 3g is a tethered jailbreak, if it loses power to reboot just re-run blackra1n.

If your iphone is unlocked via ultrasnow, then stay away from blackra1n as it will update your baseband causing you to lose your carrier unlock.
