Remember when the Google Phone released, how we all felt envious about the fact that Android users were getting to use Gmail push. iPhone users around the world were desperate to have the feature, so that they could use it as a free alternative to the paid ‘Mobile Me’ service. Many placed repeated requests on the Google mobile forum and finally gave up when there was no positive response. However, all the prayers have been answered on Google’s official blog today!
Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.
Here’s a tutorial on how to setup Push Gmail on your iPhone.
1) Make sure you are on iPhone firmware 3.0 or above.
2) Backup your contacts and calenders to your computer using iTunes.
3) Go to Settings and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
4) Tap Add Account and in the following screen, select Microsoft exchange.
5) Enter the necessary information in the respective fields i.e.
- Email field: Enter your full email id. (If you get “Unable to verify certificate” warning, ignore it)
- Domain Name field: Leave blank.
- Username: Enter your full email id.
- Password: Enter your password.
6) Choose next in the top-right corner of the screen and select Accept if theUnable to Verify Certificate dialog appears.
7) In the next step, enter m.google.com in the Server field.
8 ) Again tap on next in the top-right corner of the screen and choose the Google services you want to sync.
9) Choose Keep on my iPhone option so that you don’t delete the existing contacts and calenders on your iPhone.
Note: If you want to sync only My contacts group, you will have to select ‘delete existing contacts’ option when prompted. If you choose the ‘keep the existing contacts’ option, All contacts group will be synced.
10) Congrats you have setup Google sync. If push is enabled on your iPhone, the syncing process will begin automatically. If not open mail, calender and contact apps and wait for sometime for Google sync to start.
