I was really pleased when Skype was first released into the app store for iphone, as I am a monthly subscriber, but this soon turned to dissapointment with the discovery that it could only be used over wifi networks.
Then I discovered an app called voipover3g which was only available via Cydia, which would mean jailbreaking my precious iphone. After much thinking, this and many other reasons persuaded me to jailbreak for the first time.
After installation I thought voipover3g was great, it allows skype and other voip calls over 3g networks, although the quality of the call can drop, it was now much more useful when out and about as theres a much better chance of a 3g signal as apposed to always having access to wifi!
But good news, in the US for the minute at least, AT&T has just announced that they are going to let the usage of skype and other voip applications over their 3g network.

All of us at skype applaud todays announcement by AT&T, that it will open up its 3g network to internet calling applications such as skype. Its the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of mobile skype users, and the internet itself.

we are very happy that AT&T is now supporting voip applications. we will be amending our developer agreement to get voip apps in the store and in our customers hands as soon as possible.
All this is great news, though it wont happen overnight, so watch the app store for a skype 3g update.
Well done AT&T, now for us UK skype users, will O2 follow suit, we hope so, COME ON O2, PULL YOUR SOCKS UP!!!
